FDA Will Not Reverse Stance on Zicam
October 26, 2009 - Matrixx Initiatives, Inc. stated that the FDA will not change its position regarding Zicam Nasal Cold Remedies. Earlier this year the FDA sent Matrixx a warning letter regarding its nasal spray and nasal gel cold remedies. The warning letter stated that the FDA had numerous reports of anosmia following the use of Zicam products. Matrixx voluntarily recalled its products following the warning.

Zinc Gluconate may Cause Anosmia (Loss of Smell)
Articles written about the intranasal use of zinc gluconate often attribute its use to loss of smell. According to the articles, divalent zinc ions are toxic to olfactory receptor cells. Its this toxicity that can lead to anosmia. Often times people who use zinc gluconate experience an immediate and severe burning of the nose followed by severe hyposmia or anosmia. The anosmia or hyposmia are generally linked to the zinc gluconate when other causes of the sensory loss (such as previous sinus surgery, chronic sinusitis, nasal polyposis or other pathology) are ruled out.
If you have used an intranasal product containing Zinc Gluconate, like Zicam, and have suffered severe hyposmia (reduced ability to smell) or anosmia (inability to smell), you may be entitled to legal compensation. Contact the lawyers at the Allen Law Firm for a free consultation.
